The Orchid and The Bee

Song & lyrics by Fiona Ackerman, vocal performance by Amber Webber, vocal recording by Josh Wells

Once upon a time lived an orchid and a bee

Each vying for survival on the banks of the black sea

The bee was lonely in a swarm of his brothers

The orchid was alone she couldn't move to touch the others close by

But the orchid found a way

She began to change a bit with every passing day

She found the odour and she found the perfect colour

Turned herself into the image of the bee’s lover

When the bee finally flew by

The patient little orchid sure caught his eye

He said that’s the most beautiful bee that I ever did see

She’s so lovely cause she looks like me

Summer after summer as the bee was trying

He never once considered that his lover was lying

Summer after summer the orchids were surviving

Never once noticing the bees were dying

First he came now and then

Then he never came back again

Summer after summer the orchids were thinning

Waiting for her bee she was back at the beginning

The others told her to be someone else’s lover

She would never try again, there’d never be another

The orchid understood, she would have to give it everything she could

She’d recreate herself on her own, a field of flowers made all alone

The other flowers asked her why?

Why not give a bird or a butterfly a try?

She said he was like a mirror in the sky, looking for me

Everywhere he flew, he set me free, he set me free, he set me free.
